When Schizer passed I felt ususual. I couldn't help but think I didnt do enough to help my best friend. The days that followed were worse and with my health all over the map I saw myself become someone different. I didn't want to blog or go to work, leaving the house became a chore and I felt all sorts of crazy. Three months go by and I knew I wasn't ready to adopt again. I filled out an application to foster and received Sammy a few weeks later. My life had purpose again. I mean look at this face:

From the moment I saw his squiggly body I knew I was going to find him the best family I could.

I was chosen to help save him, give him a place to stay so he wouldn't end up in a shelter. But with my mood changing by the minute and my craziness taking a back seat I couldn't help but realize... he helped mine.

So, AAA came out with a study stating how dogs are an increasing distraction for drivers. Here's what they found...

I dont know about you but when i first saw this article i rolled my eyes. I am totally guilty of most of these, especially the one about having your dog on your lap. It was the only way Schizer would drive with me alone. In fact, it was more distracting trying to keep her off my lap then having her on.

Then yesterday happened. I was racing back to work on lunch when i came to a red light. I was behind a woman that didnt know the light turned green. 1 one thousand, 2 one thousand, 3 one thousand, BEEPPPP!!! I just had to! Then she goes 30 in a 45 and i was so enraged the car was fogging. When the road finally reached two lanes, i looked over ready with my meanest get off your phone look, when i see the woman giving kissy faces to her dog. The yellow lab then stuck his head out the window with the biggest grin ever.

Damn it i thought, i was no longer mad and actually caught myself smiling. Case in point... We get distracted because we are witnessing ad learning what those crazy non dog lovers (AAA) arent; it's the little things in life that lead to happiness. Like wind blowing in your hair.

Hi friends! Great news, I went down to Miami Animal Services and adopted this precious dog.

She was found as a stray and no one claimed her, maybe it was the infestation of fleas, or her mange, or maybe her bum leg but whatever the reason they never came for her, she's all mine! I can't wait to tell you all about our new adventures. For starters, here she is on her first trip to the beach!!

I still cant believe how even the smallest daily chores remind me of her but little by little the memories are happy ones. I will also try to fix the comic I posted yesterday, not sure what happened with that! I guess this wasn't much of a Silent Sunday at all!!!

I remember the day she came into my life like it was yesterday. I loved her from the very moment she tried to bite me but I had no idea that the love I felt that day would last so long and grow to be one of the strongest absolutes in my life. She was there for me when I thought my world was going to end, she licked my face until there were no more tears and she had this way of looking into my eyes that made me feel safe. When she was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure I knew I would do anything and everything to help her live as long as she could and the medication worked for quite some time. That is until the day came when it didn't. It all happened so fast, she couldn't breathe, and she wasn't responding to the oxygen or injections. I looked into her eyes, the ones that provided me with such comfort over the years, and I knew. I knew she was suffering, I knew enough was enough. I held her when the doctor gave that final injection and when her body went limp, with the tears coming from my eyes I couldn't help but think I let her down. I still do. When I reached my driveway that night I sat in my car for what seemed like forever. I was too afraid to walk into my house knowing she wasn't waiting for me on the other side. When I finally got up the courage to open the door and walk in I knew at that moment I would forever be changed. For on that day a piece of my heart left with Schizer's soul, a piece that can never be replaced. Rest In Peace Schizer. You were the best dog anyone could ever ask for and I love you more than words could ever explain.

Whenever I go away I always want to go to the local shelter but when they don't have one, the local street dogs or as the Bahamas like to call them Potcakes, always take my breath away. I remember being in Nassau and wanting to take almost every Potcake home with me, it didnt happen but I bought them McDonalds to make up for it. The best thing about street dogs is their ability to not take any sh*t, honestly we can probably all learn alot from these bold dogs. Take a look...

I'm Back!

So after a bagillion days of waiting for the grand opening pictures I have some to show! The day was great, we thought it was going to rain but thank goodness it held off. We had such a huge turnout that it made all the running around worth it!

This was by far the biggest dog I have ever seen in person!

Thsi dog's hair was dyed pink. Apparently the fad started in France and made a huge hit during fashion week this year in the States. I wonder what this dog is thinking? Probably that if the camera was to get any closer she was going to bite the photographer's face off! Once an ankle biter always an ankle biter, pink dye will NOT change that.

Three of these dogs were adopted right after the fashion show and thank goodness none of them used the carpet to wipe their butt or use as a chew toy!

So before I show you this super cool video, I just want to say that I've been busy busy busy! I am currently putting together a fashion show for a grand opening event of an animal shelter and between getting the adoptable dogs runway ready and making jewelry, things have been crazy crazy crazy. I can't wait to show you all a video and pictures of how it all turns out!!

So now for our feature presentation...

Has anyone seen this before?!?! I personally think I would have had a heart attack if my dog jumped in after a shark, hooked or not!!!!!!!!!!!! But this dog is definitely a bad a** and think it's totally cool.

You know those weeks where you feel like there aren't enough hours in the day? Well, man oh man, have I been feeling that lately. I needed to relax, so what better way to relax than taking pictures of my dogs? Taking pictures of my motley crew puts such a smile on my face, I can only imagine what people looking on think while I yell and command my dogs to do things while they are running the other way. I was trying to get crafty, because I see every day what incredible pictures you all have on your blogs, and used black and white film. I opened the window to see if Reggie would jump out, he has before, and instead Tac jumped in after his stroll around the neighborhood!

Did you know Lewis purchased a Newfoundland, named Seaman, for $20 in 1803 to occupany him and Clark on their expedition?

Have you ever heard about Bud? In 1903, Dr. Horatro Nelson Jackson, took him along for an adventure and he became the first dog to cross the United States.

Or about Benny and Maxx? Kayak extraordinaires!

I think what it all comes down to is adventures, whether its finding new land or crossing Lake Ida, is much more fun when you have a dog to share it with!

Dogs Behaving Badly

I was reading the news from around the country today and found an article about dogs behaving badly from L.A. which gave me an idea for today's topic. Why do dogs feel the need to push our buttons? We all know how incredibly smart dogs are, the way they can make our heart skip a beat but then comes that time, oh boy, that time when you stop and think, you have to be kidding me right?! That's when our wonderful dogs behave badly, when they do something so ridicously stupid you think your dog was replaced by some alien dog from another dimension. Some yell, some stomp their feet to teach their dogs that their behavior is unacceptable, while others take a different approach and get their camera....

National Guide Dog Month

In honor of National Guide Dog month I wanted to share a unique and touching story I found with you all.

This is Bonnie and Clyde:

They were found as strays and have a beautfiul friendship. Clyde is completely blind and Bonnie guides him everywhere. She stays inches from Clyde's side while guiding him on walks or to food and water. Bonnie even lets him rest his head on her body whenever he becomes disorientated and leads him in the direction they should be going.

Vicky Bell, a spokeswoman for Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, said she had never heard of a dog voluntarily acting as a guide dog for another dog. The article I found was written back in July 2009, so I wrote an email to see if the shelter was able to find a home to take both Bonnie and Clyde and they were! They are currently living in a home with a large fenced in backyard and the owner stated she sometimes forgets Clyde is blind because Bonnie is such a good leader!

Quick info on Guide Dogs:

Most guide dogs are provided free of charge. This includes training, transportation to and from the school, room and board during the 25-day training program, and aftercare services. Home-based, combination home and residential and small group training is offered to qualified applicants.

It costs more than $50,000 to complete the training of one guide dog. This includes all expenses from breeding to raising the dog to training it and matching it with a blind person.

Guide dogs undergo a comprehensive training program, and only the best of the best complete the training and become working guides. In short, guide dogs are taught how to find and follow a clear path, maneuver around obstacles, and stop at curbs. They follow their teammate's directions, and they know that they can disobey only in the face of danger.

During the training program, blind students first learn about the commands the dog knows. Over a several week period, they are taught everything there is to know about how to work with a guide dog. In addition, they learn about proper care of the dog, which ranges from feeding to grooming to medical issues. Access laws, public awareness and other issues also are covered during the 25-day program.

Lastly: Guide dogs should be ignored. Distractions take their concentration away from the work they have to do—which can put the dog and its teammate in jeopardy. Do not pet or feed a guide dog and do not encourage the dog to misbehave.

I'm definately in the movie mood, I found this fantastic 1920s clip on what one trainer taught his dog to do. Now it's 2010 and I know I wouldn't be able to teach any of my dogs how to do this, but if this is what dog trainers were teaching in 1920 why aren't our dogs driving cars yet or doing something equally as amazing? I think its time for Cesar Millan to step up his game.

Happy Thursday! I was lucky enough to have time to bring my dogs to the beach today and video Reggie! It was very very hot out but we had lots of fun! FYI, this is not what the beaches in Florida look like, they are much prettier, this is an intercoastal park. Dogs aren't allowed at the regular beaches but we found this quiet place one weekend and sneak past the sign! Take a look...

The Little Blue Pill

My husband emailed me this story and I had to share. Take a look at this face:

Her name is Ingrid and she is up for adoption at the Little Shelter Animal Rescue. She was found lying by a fenced battered and bruised by what shelter officials think as the results of being bait for dog fighting.

She's is also special needs dog that has been on medicine for congestive heart failure. I am no stranger to this disease as my Schizer Baby has the same one but out of the 12 pills Schizer gets a day, Ingrid is happily healthy on just one. Viagra. She receives one Viagra three times daily to open the vessels by her heart and allow the blood to flow to her entire body. The medicine is currently being donated by men on Long Island but according to one newspaper, if every man who is currently prescribed to Viagra donated one pill, Ingrid would be set for years to come.

So, let's help Ingrid, tell your neighbors, husbands, friends, and family. If they can't donate a little blue pill get the word out that she needs a family of her own. Ingrid has been at the shelter for years and it is time.

7) I sometimes feel like I should have a warning sign on my door for the zoo that lives in my house!

I Won a Giveaway!!

I was sooo excited when I heard I won the giveaway from Tiffany at The Tales of Dexter and Nora's blog but when I received it in the mail I just couldn't believe it!!! The dogs knew it was for them as soon as I brought it in the house! It must of been all the yummy treats lurking from inside! Reggie had a great time getting the box open and even paw delivered me my special note!

He then ran right back to the box because he knew he was in for super special surprises today!

He picked out the rope immediately! Maxx went for the leopard stuffed dog bone!

Schizer, my princess, went for the SNUGGIE!!!!!

I think i'm going to go to the store and get a matching one.

Bring your dog to church day.

The Calvary Episcopal Church in Danvers, Mass., is now allowing members of their church to bring their dogs! The first "Perfect Paws Pet Ministry" will be held later this month and once a month there after. Barking is allowed says the minister but mass will be held in a different room of the church. There will be communion for the humans and special treats for the canines. Owners can submit special prayers for sick animals, dogs that can not be around other dogs and for cats, birds and horses.

UPDATE: After some additional research, this is not the only church that allows dogs. I personally have been to a church event that blesses the animals in the church parking lot but when I came across this story I was amazed they are now allowing animals inside the church. I'm on the fence, though I'm not a big church goer, one side of me thinks it would be cool to bring my dog with me, the other side thinks it would be a huge distraction.

Oh, the Census. It was the front page story of the newspaper today and with all the hoopla and advertisments about getting counted I had to wonder... who's counting the dogs? In fact as a Census worker trainee, I know how important the numbers can be especially for some breeds. Did you know that Miami County has a ban on Pitbulls? So, I cruised the all mighty web and low and behold I found the 1st Census for Dogs. This website has a fun survey that can include your dog in a very special count. As of today, 16045 dogs have been counted and just like the real census it says takes about 10 minutes to fill out. You can also click on a state and find out, based on Wisdom Panel's research, what the most popular and most unique breed is for your state! Pretty cool, especially if you have nothing else to do!

The United States Postal Service has come out with new stamps for a good cause! These stamps are so adorable they make you want to sit down and write that letter you've been putting off. In fact, they are so cute letter writing might come back in style and emailing might soon be a thing of the past. Well, maybe not but take a look:

The 10 animals you see above are from an animal shelter in New Milford, CT. According to the Stamps to the Rescue website: "We want more Americans to know about the millions of shelter pets that need good homes. Nearly half of the animals that enter animal shelters are euthanized. Many of these cats and dogs would have made a wonderful pet...if only given the chance." These stamps go on sale today!

It's National Scoop the Poop Week

Have you ever stopped to consider how your dog's waste may affect our environment?

Think about this, your dog relieves itself at least once per day and at just one load per day, your dog is producing 365 loads of poop each year. Based on that information, if 1,000 dogs live in your neighborhood there would be 365,000 piles of dog waste in one year!!

Dog waste and human waste contain the same bacteria. We use toilets and sewage systems to protect our drinking water and the environment. When we don't pick up after our dogs, the poop left on the ground runs off into streams, lakes, and canals which, in return, affect our quality of water.

Disease is another important reason to scoop the poop. E.coli, roundworms, and hookworms are just a few diseases that are transmittable to humans. If a child touches something that has had contact with feces and then puts their hand in their mouth she can contract the disease. Gross!!

First up.. Pet Service Finder

This app lets you find pet services fast and easy! This is great for when you're on vacation!

2. Pet age calculator

It's not just times 7 years anymore. Science has proven that dogs age faster but the amount of times faster depends on breed and size. This app can estimate just how old your dog is!

3. Dog First Aid

This app is easy to use and great to have for those just incase moments.

4. Breedopedia

With all the different breeds out there now, this application is great to distinguish each and every one of them!

5. Dog Tricks and Bark Machine

Here we have an app that is going to put dog trainers out of business everywhere. Well, not quite but one review said, "There is some room for improvement with the noises, but over all, it is just great! I'm a trainer in Seattle and if my students got this app and read it on the bus or practiced at home, I would be a happy woman!"

How do you stop a humping dog? Some trainers would say EXCERCISE as a tired dog is a good dog, others would realize that maybe it IS time to neuter him; still others would look for something else to fix their dog's wild sexual desires. I have just the thing [drum roll please] and warning this is not appropriate for children......

Where did dock diving come from? I'm sure I can look it up on a webpage out in internet space, but I wonder who thought a dog jumping into the water should be a sport. I absolutely love watching it on TV, its something about those big goofy labs jumping into the water after their favorite toy that puts a smile on my face.

While we were driving this morning, my friend brought up the horses that used to dive into the pools in Atlantic City, and I am certain this is where the idea for dock diving came from no matter what anyone says. Take a look at this:

A client came into the clinic with their dog that was in the ER the night before. What made this dog stick out of the many we see each day was its "problem," congestive heart failure. This dog has a grade 5/6 heart murmur and an enlarged heart from it, exactly like my Schizer baby. When the dog came in it was coughing so hard it could hardly catch its breath. The owners came in to talk about humane euthanasia as they thought it was the only option. My heart broke.

In Congestive heart failure the dog's heart cannot pump the blood effectively, and fluid backs up into different organs. The most common type of congestive heart failure in dogs involves the left side of the heart, causing blood to back up into the lungs. The lungs become congested with fluid, leading to panting, coughing, or difficulty breathing or the heart enlarges from over compensation and presses on the trachea.

Schizer is on all the same medicine, has had the disease years longer, is older and yet doing 100% better that the dog that walked into the clinic today. In fact, when studying about the disease prognosis is guarded to poor with many dogs passing within the year but my dog was diagnosed over two summers ago. What's the difference? I think it’s the pack dynamic. Schizer is around other dogs to keep her company, focused and young 24 hours a day. I looked all over the internet, including veterinary journals and studies, but I couldn't find any science to support my claim though I'm pretty much convinced that it is the reason that my dog is still alive.

Schizer still jumps on Maxx's back; she coughs a bit but literally shakes it off. She makes sure everyone who comes over knows who's boss by stepping in front of the other dogs while they are getting affection. She still attempts to jump off the bed and even chases tennis balls though I limit her play time. She barks and barks at the children next door and still sticks her head out the car window. All of this energy for a dog I was told wouldn't last the Florida summer.

The other dogs make her young at heart even if that heart is three times the size it should be.

WITH A GIRAFFE!!!

I just had to had to had to take a small break from the world of dogs to share my intense weekend with my new animal friends. I was given free tickets to the circus so I took my motley crew of friends and set out on an adventure. To my super awesome surprise the petting zoo had a giraffe!!!

The petting zoo also had this incredibly smart goat. Instead of eating the few pellets that were in my hand he took the whole cup I was holding! I know he was just so happy with himself because he posed for a picture...

Poop. Yes. This post is for all things poop in fact. The "Ohh that's cute in a gross way," to the "what the.. you gotta be kidding." The first product I would like to digust.. I mean discuss (cough, cough), is The Yule Doos. Take a look:

Every Christmas my mother and I search the malls, Christmas stores and kiosks for the perfect Christmas tree ornament and this may just be next year's pick. I mean it is most definately a conversation starter at the yearly party or at least a second looker!

This toy runs for $6.95 and is what all the coolest dogs are dreaming about these days. No, not seriously. I think this toy is used more for the pet owner's amusement then the dog's and it's probably to make a funny picture like the one above or the next best youtube movie. Found a new activity everyone can do with their dogs! It's called geocaching. Its treasuring hunting and with more than 1 million to find it can turn into your dog's weekly day out. What happens is your put coordinates into your GPS, or for me my new Iphone App, and you follow the compass to the area the hidden treasure is in. Some are large and have tradeable items others are tiny and have logs where you can document you were there. I went yesterday with my husband and Reggie and we had a killer time! So get outside and have some geocaching fun with your dog!

Spectacular Weekend

I went camping this weekend in Keyston Heights, FL and went sight seeing in St. Augustine. Here are my traveling pictures. I hope you enjoy!

This first picture is from the moss that hung from almost every tree. I was told this stuff ends up killing the tree it is hanging from, but I thought it was just beautiful!

We adventured to a fort in St. Augustine. It was huge! I tried imagining what it would be like defending it while we took our own little tour. What a magnificent building.

This sign was posted by the swimming lake!!!! Seriously?! Who goes in after seeing this? Do they really think an alligator wont get passed the rope border they put up?

This dog was having a blast watching all the people and pets that passed below him. St. Augustine was as pet friendly as it gets. Almost everyone we saw had a dog with them!

This is Nugget at the fort! She was also having a blast being the only dog with us that weekend. She received as sorts of extra loving! If you haven't been I 100% recommend this gorgeous city!

Its Wild Wednesday, which means time to cruise the internet for wacky dog inventions.

The Dog-e-Minder

This contraption is an ID tag that also tracks when the dog last ate, went for a walk, or had its medicine by a press of the button. I think it could be pretty handy for the person who forgets if they gave their dog its medicine or not. We get a few calls a week at the animal hospital asking what happens to the pet if the owner forgot to give insulin or heart meds. I think this would be a good tool for them, I mean everyone needs a little help sometimes right? Its 20 bucks, so the price is even manageable. Doesn't it look awfully bulky though for a dog and my dogs play pretty rough sometimes. I wonder how durable it is? Does anyone own one? Would you?

There is nothing better than a beautiful day at the beach with the dogs! The look on their faces was priceless. I took so many pictures it was hard to choose which ones to post! There will definately be a Part 2 coming!

Max sure does love car rides!

I love this picture, they all love hanging out the window. Before I took this one we stopped at a different beach and Max was so excited he jumped right out the window!

When we got to the beach the dogs went crazy. Max was running back and forth trying to catch the Seagulls in the sky. Reggie was loving all the sticks everywhere, he couldn't decide which one he wanted to chomp on, and Schize, well she was more concerned with marking her scent she could have cared less where we were. I still don't understand how such a little dog can harbor so much pee!

The kitty is our house cat Callie. Someone brought her in to be euthanized because they were moving and couldnt take her with them!!!!!!!! The nerve!!!!!! We took her in and shes been living at the hospital ever since.

With each passing day pets are becoming more and more like children. I personally would do anything for my dogs and have in the past. Whether its paying for outrageous medical bills, getting them their own insurance, brushing their teeth, etc. things have slowly getting more and more human like. The animal hospital I work at even has something called Spa Days for special dogs and a boarding facility with Tvs and radios for the dog's comfort. When did all the hysteria happen? I have to say though, I am one of those people who dress up their dogs, sometimes on a daily basis, and i love love love when a restaurant has a menu just for them with dog bowl and all.

I received this video through email and i most definately had to blog about it. Do you thinks its a medical condition, some underlying cause for his leg to raise like that? Once upon a time The Cat belonged to an ex-room mate of ours. This cat is feral my nature but likes to sleep and eat inside and if you're really lucky he'll let you share your bed with him. One day I noticed he was limping. I told my roommate who told me if it didn't get better he'd take him to the clinic. Days went by and Cat stopped jumping up on counters, I could have sworn his limping was worse, and when i picked him up I noticed a huge lump on his shoulder. I told my room mate if he didn't take him I was going to, my room mate told me one more day. The next morning I woke up and Cat wasn't limping anymore!!!!!! Holy smokes, how did that happen? The limping was so bad I definately thought something was broken. When I checked him out, in my astonishment, I noticed a bite hole in this shoulder. The lump in his shoulder was gone and the hole was draining. I couldn't believe it, he was tired of waiting and fixed himself. I think it's only a matter of time before cats take over the world.

So i was cruising the web this afternoon and found some really wacky and one almost offensive pet products. Take a look, does anyone own one of these items? If you do please don't mind as i make fun of you.

Its called the Skineeze Stuffless dog toy. Seriously, who "invented" this? I dont know about you but this is what happens to the toys after my dog gets to them and it's time for it to be thrown away. Why would I want him to have this? It's like teaching him to go into my hamper and start chewing on my socks. What a waste and the best part, it's 10 bucks. For $10 dollars I can buy a carton of tennis balls.

It's the automatic fetch machine!!!!!!!!!! How lazy do you have to be to not be able to throw your dog a ball. In fact if youre that lazy why do you even have a dog! The kicker.... its $120. Ha!

I'm working at an animal hospital because I’m as obsessed with animals as I’ve always been but have yet to find someone who would take care of my dogs as well as you.

Mom doesn't look a day older but has gotten as stubborn as you about her health and going to the doctor. Steve is in college and has become one of the smartest and most dependable people I know. Billy, still as funny as ever, has gotten married to a beautiful woman over in San Diego and Daddy has become obsessed with the beauty of wine.

I now have three sisters which I still cant believe but even with all this change I still feel the need to cry every time I pass Hallandale Beach Blvd and when I get lost in my thoughts while grocery shopping. I knew the day of the funeral Florida would never be the same, I knew in my heart I would never be the same either. Its my memories that put the smile on my face, so I drink my tea or rum and cokes, and tell the stories of when Beach Haven was an unthinkable definite, of Christmas Eve monk fish soup, when you saved my life from the evil grapes, and of dancing to Frankie and Dean. Four years have gone quick but I still and always will think of you every day and will fill my future children's once upon a times with stories of you.

Holy moly! I can’t believe this exists! Schizer is on Lasix which makes her urinate alllllll over the place. She seriously has to go every hour sometimes twice an hour, so I went to the store to get diapers because we were going to my mother in laws house and I didn’t want the embarrassment. The stupid things only stayed on for a little bit, and then we would find it down the hall or by the couch. I thought what a waste of money!!!! Little did I know I needed the attachment! It’s called the pet diaper harness. I am so buying this!

I've been reading everyone's funny pet moments from my sweepstakes below (which will close on Friday), and I would like to share one of mine! True story: When Schizer was becoming symptomatic due to her enlarged heart, I wasn't sleeping very well. At all. For nights on end. She was coughing all night, pacing the bed when she needed to go out (a reoccurring side effect from her medicine), and when she wasn’t, I was up making sure she was still breathing!
One night she started to walk around the bed in what looked like a drunken stupor, staggering around, with her back legs giving out from behind her. I woke up in a panic, and thought she wasn't able to walk and that she was having a stroke (again). I was freaking out, so I rolled over, violently shaking my husband to wake him up.

"She can’t walk, she can’t walk," I cried. He woke up startled, leaned up in bed.

"What's wrong with her," he asked, half-dazed, half-pissed off (it had to be 3 in the morning).

"Her legs aren't working! Look at her back legs," I told him.

He propped himself up further, and squinted to focus. Just as he did...

"What the...She's sh**ting on me! She's f#$@ing sh**ting on me!" He was hysterical, and couldn't even begin to get mad. We both sat there (momentarily) laughing until it hurt. Ohhhhh, she could walk just fine. She just had an immediate case of bowl movement directly onto the sheets covering my husband's legs. Gotta love the old lady, and her sense of entitlement!

There is something about cats that unsettles me. They are simply too independent and only show affection when they want something. I used to think my cats loved me when they rubbed up against me, then I read it’s how they mark what’s theirs. So no love for me they're just trying to dominate me, own me.

What is it with cats and killing things? I can no longer give my cat’s wet food because when I do I am sure to have a dead squirrel or mouse or even opossum at my doorstep hours later. It’s really weird. I guess they enjoy the wet food so much it’s their way of giving me thanks. I'd rather have them run up against me, no need for the massacre that occurs and they are never anywhere near the dead rodent, but i know better.

This dog will have anyone who enters the house wrapped around his fluffy little paw. He's an absolute mush as long as your aren’t a bird, helicopter, firework, jogger, UPS truck or our neighbor's kids. If you are or are doing any of the aforementioned, DO NOT come near him. He has a ceaseless capacity for yelping until we acknowledge it: 'Yes Maxx, we see the airplane. Thank you.'

What is it with dogs jumping up into the air to try and catch birds in the sky anyway? Does he REALLY think he is going to catch it?!? Not only does Maxx try to catch birds that are beyond the clouds, but he chases all things airborn. I'm not exaggerating. He seriously runs back and forth until the helicopter is out of sight and ear's range. Books and professionals say he is being reinforced when the helicopter or bird, "goes away." In his mind he did his job, protecting his family from the monsters--I say he's an idiot, but it makes me love him even more.

If you are not any of the things I mentioned above, he will undoubtedly be your best friend. He will follow you around the house waiting to be pet, hugged, or just being the recipeint of any affection you want to show him. Then, begins the butt-wag. I'm glad whoever owned him prior to us adopting him decided to have his tail clipped. That thing would knock over bookcases, seven-foot basketball players and small buildings if it were still around.

If you even glance in his direction he'll try to kiss you (and by kiss, I mean lick every square inch of your face until you stink as good as the back of his throat). I blame his quirks on the fact he came from Alabama and the unknown five years we didn't have him as part of our family. Quirks aside, I love this dog.

What is it with dogs and cat litter?!? I seriously have no idea what would make a dog want to eat what comes out of a cat's butt, but it happens, a little too much in my house for my liking!!!

Meet the Pack: Schizer AKA "The Instigator"

In for: Sibling Abuse

We found Schizer after hurricane Wilma. I was on my way to the grocery store when I saw a dog running around the parking lot, knowing my husband would not condone another dog in the house, I got in the car and went to the store knowing if the dog was there when I got back I would help it. When I got back to the apartment there was the dog still running back and forth through the parking lot. Soooo, I tried to pick her up and she tried to bite me. For any normal person that would have been the end, for me I sat and waited for my husband. Five years later she as spoiled as it comes, I mean I am seriously wrapped around her little paw. She’s on six pills in the morning and six pills at night for a heart condition she had developed. I don’t know what it is about dogs and schedules but she has it down to the minute. Three o'clock in the morning she walks around the bed until I pick her up and let her out, 7 in the morning she does the same. If I want to sleep in, it’s only after I have let her old butt out twice and given her her pills. If I try to ignore it she climbs herself up onto my stomach and paws at my face until I give in. Where did she learn this?

Her and car rides are a trip, she will only ride in the car if she’s on your lap. If you put her on another seat or on the floor she climbs up and onto your lap, whether you’re driving or not.

If she’s hungry she barks until you feed her, some may call this lack of training, I call it old age.

Her real problem is her sibling abuse. She HATES her brother Maxx. She growls and pushes him over, tries to steal his food. If you’re giving Maxx love she'll step in front of him, if you’re on the couch laying together, she'll climb on you until you give her attention. She barks if you say his name and follows him everywhere to make sure he's not getting something she’s not. She licks his face until he’s soaking wet and stands on top of him while he's sleeping if she doesn’t feel like doing the same. She owns him, he's hers.

Then the day came when her heart started to give out. I was almost home alone, I say almost because my roommates at the time were useless, when she fainted. She was walking fine at one moment and at the next she was on her side crying, then out. I screamed and yelled for help. I thought she was gone. We went to the hospital where her vet at the time told me she wouldn’t live through the summer. That day was two summers ago. Last time I complained about schize's condition, my dad, the non dog lover, joked, "didn’t that dog die years ago."

Jury's back. Not guilty due to old age and lack of hard evidence.

Meet the Pack: Reggie A.K.A. "It wasn't me"

In for: 5 counts misbehaving, 2 counts theft, 1 count vandalism.

Reggie, our flat coated retriever, came to us out of a "free to good home" ad in the newspaper--we should have known better. This is a man's dog, a real dog’s dog. Since we took him from the crazy lady with a billion dogs (she would visit Russia, and adopt Ruskie street dogs to come home with), he has had many "it wasn’t me" moments. For instance, one time while having people over for a BBQ, we had all of the food on a plate outside ready to be put on the grill (note: safely centered on the table on the deck) and when we came back outside...the food had miraculously vanished. I am talking about raw hamburger patties, hotdogs, and shrimp--he didn't even spare the skewers.

Then there are the times where he has to prove his masculinity and hump the pillows in the house: I mean full on humping to the point where he rips the pillow cases right off. Needless to say, no house tours were given that night.

What is it with dogs wanting exactly what you don’t want them touching? I bought this beautiful, black, furry throw blanket with sequins for the foot of our bed. I fold it up and take it off the bed nightly and put it away when I know he may have a raging desire to hump some innocently unsuspecting, inanimate household object. Somehow he always finds it, and makes it his own. I'll find him fully wrapped around it with the corner in his mouth, not chewing on it but slobbering.

And what is it with dogs and car rides? Reggie will jump into any car with the door open if he's not leashed and I’m not exaggerating. A couple of years back, he dashed at first sight of daylight through the front door, did his best Carl Lewis imitation and sprinted down the road to the first vehicle door his eyes spotted (or possibly his leather-loving nose detected), and literally leapt into our neighbors SUV, climbed his way to the third row of seats, and--slobbering all over her window--demanded a ride around the block. And this is how we become acquainted with most of our neighbors.

This blog is for pet lovers and animal enthusiasts. It’s a blog that only these kind of people will understand and laugh at. As I write this blog, I’m sitting at my kitchen table looking out onto my life. My husband is holding our cocker spaniel on one couch, who has successfully sprawled out belly up, watching football, on the other couch is my lab also sprawled out with his tongue and head falling off the couch as he slowly falls asleep, and my smallest dog, Schizer aka our wireless vacuum, is cruising the house looking for crumbs our guests may have dropped after eating pizza. Everything is so calm right now, I wonder where the cats are, and so it begins....
